Water desalination is on the rise due to recent droughts. Nations such as Australia and Israel, as well as cruise ships and military operations with low access to clean natural drinking water have been using desalination plants for a number of years. These plants utilize reverse osmosis to eliminate salt from seawater, making it safe and palatable.

Cost is a concern for these plants. When they are powered through grid power, the cost of the water increases greatly to accommodate the high energy usage. Powering the purification process through solar however provides possible financial relief. Scientists and engineers in Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates are working to create such plants, which completed project dates as soon as 2017.
